Phoenix to Break Ground on New Wheelchair Softball Field, Expanding Adaptive Sports Opportunities

Phoenix is expanding adaptive sports opportunities with a new wheelchair softball field at Telephone Pioneers Park. The City of Phoenix, Ability360, and Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation will celebrate the project with a groundbreaking ceremony on November 6, 2026.

PHOENIX, AZ — November 4, 2026 — The City of Phoenix is taking another step toward making recreational sports more accessible for athletes with disabilities. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, Ability360, and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation will host a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, November 6, 2026, to celebrate the start of construction on a new wheelchair softball field at Telephone Pioneers of America Park.

The new facility will be the first wheelchair softball field of its kind in north Phoenix, providing local adaptive athletes with a dedicated space for competitive play, recreation, and community engagement.

Building on Phoenix’s History of Accessible Recreation

Located at 1946 W. Morningside Drive, Telephone Pioneers of America Park has a longstanding history of promoting accessibility and inclusion.

Established in 1988, the park became the first barrier-free park in the United States specifically designed to accommodate individuals with physical disabilities.

Nearly four decades later, the addition of a wheelchair softball field represents another investment in the park’s original mission of providing recreational opportunities for people of all abilities.

The project will create a dedicated facility where wheelchair softball athletes can participate in organized sports without the accessibility challenges often associated with traditional athletic fields.

Partnership Brings Adaptive Sports Facility to North Phoenix

The project is a collaboration between the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, Ability360, and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation.

Ability360 is an Arizona-based organization dedicated to empowering people with disabilities through independent living services, advocacy, and adaptive sports programs.

The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation supports community initiatives throughout Arizona, including programs that expand access to youth sports, recreation, and community resources.

Together, the organizations are working to provide adaptive athletes with a specialized facility designed to support wheelchair softball and encourage greater participation in recreational athletics.

Why Wheelchair Softball Matters

Wheelchair softball is an adaptive version of traditional softball that allows athletes with physical disabilities to participate in competitive team sports.

Unlike traditional softball fields, which typically feature grass and dirt surfaces, wheelchair softball facilities use accessible playing surfaces that allow athletes to maneuver their wheelchairs more effectively.

Dedicated adaptive sports facilities can help eliminate barriers to participation while encouraging physical activity, teamwork, and social connections.

The new Phoenix field is expected to expand opportunities for local athletes who may otherwise need to travel outside their communities to access specialized playing facilities.

The City of Phoenix and its community partners are inviting members of the media to attend the ceremonial groundbreaking.

Expanding Accessibility Across Phoenix

Accessible athletic facilities provide more than a place to compete. They also create opportunities for community involvement, athletic development, and greater visibility for adaptive sports.

By building on the historic accessibility mission of Telephone Pioneers Park, the city and its partners aim to make wheelchair softball more accessible to athletes throughout North Phoenix.

Specific construction timelines, project costs, and an anticipated opening date were not included in the announcement.
