DALLAS — Oklahoma turned a 10-point halftime deficit into a rivalry victory Saturday, defeating No. 1 Texas 27–24 on Tate Sandell’s 47-yard field goal as time expired at the Cotton Bowl.

The Sooners scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams to earn the Pop-Tarts Bowl Crazy Good Team of the Week honor for games played the weekend of October 10, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America’s All-America Committee.

The recognition is Oklahoma’s 10th, giving the Sooners sole possession of the award’s all-time lead and breaking a tie with Michigan State. Oklahoma last received the honor after winning at Alabama in November 2025.

Fourth-Quarter Interceptions Change the Game

Oklahoma’s defense delivered two crucial interceptions in the fourth quarter.

Peyton Bowen returned the first interception 42 yards for a touchdown, putting the Sooners ahead 24–17. After Texas tied the game, Courtland Guillory intercepted another pass with 19 seconds remaining, giving Oklahoma one final opportunity to avoid overtime.

Quarterback John Mateer then completed consecutive passes of 13 and 20 yards to Isaiah Sategna III, moving the Sooners into position for Sandell’s winning kick.

Sandell also connected on a 53-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Sooners Deliver in All Three Phases

Special teams provided Oklahoma’s first touchdown when Danny Okoye blocked a punt and Dakoda Fields recovered the ball in the end zone.

Lloyd Avant added a two-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter before Bowen’s interception return gave Oklahoma the lead.

The victory improved the Sooners to 3–2 overall and 1–1 in SEC play. It was Oklahoma’s first win over a No. 1 opponent since defeating Missouri in 2007.

Oklahoma hosts Kentucky on Saturday, October 17.

Rivalry Produces Another National Honor

The Texas–Oklahoma rivalry has now produced seven FWAA National Team of the Week selections since the award began in 2002.

Oklahoma previously earned recognition for its 65–13 win over Texas in 2003. The Longhorns received the honor following rivalry victories in 2008, 2013, 2015, 2018 and 2022.

This week’s award marks the 331st selection across the program’s 25 seasons. Each winning team receives assorted Pop-Tarts and a custom game ball from Dallas-based football manufacturer Big Game USA.
