Be it for school, work or other reasons, life will inevitably pull us in many directions, even if that direction is across town or across the country. With that move comes a whole sea of emotions as one chapter ends and another begins when settling in a new setting. A new blog titled “What Moving Teaches Us About Belonging,” touches on the way a move challenges us to grow and invokes the adaptability of our human nature.
First it is mentioned that a move calls upon us to be intentional and persistent in building a community. A move challenges us to get out of our shell and seek new connections. By joining different community groups or discovering a neighborhood gym or coffee shop to frequent, you begin to make the new neighborhood feel more like home. You begin to learn the lay of the new land and feel more like you belong in the new community.
Secondly Coleman says how a move calls on us to be resilient and build our own comfort. We empower ourselves to make a new city or neighborhood feel more like home by making an effort to explore our new surroundings. As we go for walks around our neighborhoods we eventually stumble upon a cute park or cafe that makes our new surrounding feel more familiar. We build a connection with our new environment and eventually make it our own.
Ultimately the piece argues that the journey of overcoming the anxieties of settling into a new town is one that can be beautiful and enriching if we allow it. Through channeling a spirit of adaptability and adventure we can build a new sense of home and community and make our new environment our own. With an open mind and heart, we can make any place feel like home.
