In 2009, a life-changing event marked the beginning of Ms. P’s Gluten Free Inc. The loss of my beloved mother, Mrs. Youlas Patterson Brown, affectionately known as MsP, set me on a path that intertwined personal health challenges with a deep-seated passion for clean eating. Struggling with severe acid reflux, digestive issues, and other related symptoms, I sought medical advice, which led to a surprising revelation. My doctor recommended eliminating fruits, vegetables, and dairy—foods I had always considered healthy. However, it wasn’t until a chance encounter with a gluten-free classmate that I discovered the real culprit: gluten.
This revelation prompted a drastic change in my lifestyle. I purged my pantry of anything containing wheat, rye, or barley and began my quest for tasty gluten-free snacks. Disappointed by the unappetizing options available, I took matters into my own hands, experimenting with recipes until I created my first product: the Cookie Bar. The positive response from my co-workers at the federal prison where I worked was overwhelming, and they quickly dubbed my creation “crack bars.” This was the spark that ignited the birth of Ms. P’s Gluten Free Inc.
Today, Ms. P’s Gluten Free Inc. is more than just a business; it’s a mission to offer delicious, nutritious, and healthy gluten-free snacks to the community. Our flagship product, gluten-free granola, comes in three mouthwatering flavors, all made with organic ingredients and minimally processed sugars. We’ve pursued various funding avenues, including grants, equity financing, and personal savings. Despite these challenges, failure was never an option for Ms. P’s Gluten Free Inc.
As first-generation entrepreneurs, we faced a steep learning curve. We had to master retail operations, obtain certifications, manage finances, and develop effective marketing strategies. Despite the odds, Ms. P’s Gluten Free Inc. has grown from being on 26 retail shelves to over 80, a testament to our perseverance and commitment.
Financial hurdles have been a part of our story, but we’ve worked diligently to overcome them. In 2021, we underwent a business financial course, implemented strict budgeting practices, and steered the company toward profitability. After operating at a deficit in 2022, we reached the break-even point and are now aggressively pursuing profitability. Our community partners have played a crucial role in our success, providing support that has allowed us to expand into major retailers like Mariano’s, and set the stage for further growth into Meijer’s, Sendik’s, and ultimately Target.
