Washington, D.C. | April 25, 2025 — The U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. (USBC) commended the recent executive order signed by President Trump that establishes a new White House initiative to promote excellence and innovation at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The organization also emphasized the importance of preserving Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts as part of this progress.
USBC President and CEO Ron Busby, Sr. issued a statement recognizing the order as a meaningful step toward supporting HBCUs. He highlighted the essential role these institutions play in preparing Black students to lead in fields such as technology, healthcare, finance, and beyond. The initiative also creates a board of advisers made up of leaders from education, business, philanthropy, and HBCUs, which will help shape federal policy and build new partnerships.
While acknowledging the potential impact of the executive order, Busby expressed concern about the broader national trend of rolling back DEI protections. “True excellence and innovation cannot exist in an environment devoid of equity and inclusion,” Busby stated. “We call on policymakers, regardless of party affiliation, to recognize that supporting HBCUs must go hand in hand with maintaining robust DEI frameworks. The two are not mutually exclusive; in fact, they are inextricably linked.”
Busby pointed to DEI initiatives as longstanding safeguards that open doors to leadership, improve workplace culture, and foster opportunity for Black and minority professionals. He warned that dismantling these protections could undermine the very goals the executive order seeks to advance.
The USBC reaffirmed its dedication to policies that strengthen Black communities through education, entrepreneurship, and economic opportunity. Through its national network of African American chambers of commerce, the organization continues to advocate for inclusive policies and equitable access to success.
