CHINO HILLS, Calif. — A late-night pursuit in Chino Hills ended in a deadly confrontation Wednesday after authorities say a driver fatally shot a person who had been trapped inside the trunk of a vehicle before deputies opened fire.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to the 2000 block of Monteverde Street at approximately 10:14 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting gunfire and someone calling for help.
Responding deputies located a vehicle matching the description provided by dispatch and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop, leading deputies on a brief pursuit.
When the vehicle finally came to a stop, deputies ordered both occupants to exit. Authorities said the passenger complied with commands, but the driver instead walked to the rear of the vehicle, opened the trunk, and fired a single gunshot at a person who was inside.
Deputies immediately responded by firing their weapons, fatally striking the driver. Both the driver and the individual found inside the trunk were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have not yet determined why the victim was being held inside the trunk, and officials have not released the identities of either deceased individual pending notification of their families.
The passenger was detained as investigators worked to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and authorities have not released additional details regarding a possible motive or the relationship between those involved.
