With the Oscar nominations being revealed on January 23rd, folks nationwide are scrambling to streaming sites to catch up on the movies they missed during the 2024 season. These movies range from all genres and are certainly able to keep all viewers on their toes while watching, but what Oscar-nominated film is drawing everyone’s attention and can’t quite get people to stop talking about it?
Coming in first on the top 10 movies list was The Substance, which received five Oscar nominations last Thursday, tying it with another hit movie from 2024, Dune: Part Two. Some of the awards it was nominated for were Actress in a Leading Role (Demi Moore), Directing (Coralie Fargeat), Makeup and Hairstyling, Writing (Original Screenplay), and lastly Best Picture. The Substance labels itself as a horror/sci-fi film, which, for those who don’t keep up with such awards, is very rare to see nominated under the best picture category.
The last time a horror movie was nominated for such an award was Jordan Peele’s Get Out, which was nominated for four awards and won one for Best Original Screenplay.
The only horror movie to win such a prestigious award as Best Picture was Silence of the Lambs, which is still widely considered one of the greatest horror movies ever made. Will The Substance have what it takes to cement itself among the other Hollywood horror titans?
While the second-place movie, A Real Pain, was also nominated for two Oscars, the movie two spots below it is one of the lucky few to say that it “struck big.”
Only five movies received eight nominations or higher, and Conclave was one of those lucky few. It was nominated for several awards, including Actor in a Leading Role (Ralph Fiennes), Actress in a Supporting Role (Isabella Rossellini), and Best Picture.
At the halfway point on this list is the animated movie with the most Oscar nominations, The Wild Robot. The Wild Robot is also tied for the highest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes with a 97% on the “Tomatometer.” This cute animated film about a shipwrecked robot was nominated for three awards: Animated Feature Film, Music (Original Score), and Sound.
Two spots below The Wild Robot is the movie nominated for the most awards at the Oscars, the Netflix-released movie Emilia Pérez. The movie was nominated for 13 awards, including Best Picture, three more than the two movies tied for second, The Brutalist and Wicked. Emilia Pérez also won big a couple weeks prior at the Golden Globes, where it already won such awards as Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language. Ironically enough, out of all the movies nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, this movie has the lowest scores amongst critics, with a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes “Tomatometer” and a 6/10 on IMDb. Whether fans agree or disagree with this movie’s nomination, you can’t argue that Emilia Pérez is currently in the driver’s seat for this Oscar season.
That’s just a list of some of the most popular movies streaming right now, but what about what’s going on in television?
The hit TV show Severance is coming in first, which just started its second season on January 17, 2025. This mind-bending thriller, starring Adam Scott in the lead role, will keep viewers at the edge of their seats, trying to determine what is actually going on from episode to episode.
At the number two slot is the hit 1990 show Twin Peaks, which, similar to Severance, will have you scratching your brain from beginning to end. The show ran from April 8, 1990, to June 10, 1991, and received 29 episodes spanned across two seasons. The show would get a third season in 2017 but end after that. The show was created by the infamous David Lynch, who unfortunately passed away on January 15 this year. Lynch was known around Hollywood as a genius in entertainment and made other fan favorites like Mulholland Drive, which, if you were paying attention, came in at number 10 on the movies chart above. While Lynch may not be with us anymore to share any new creations, what he has made will always remain and impact the lives of many till the end of time.
To round up the top three is Silo, a show starring Rebecca Ferguson that has been running for two seasons. The show is set in a toxic future where many have to survive in an underground silo. The show aired on May 5, 2023, and is still ongoing.
If you go down to the bottom of this list at the nine and ten slots, these two shows are rated very highly amongst fans and critics. At number nine is The Pitt; like Severance, this show has just started its current season, which aired on January 9 of this year. The show stars Noah Wyle as Dr. Michael Robinavitch and is a hospital drama that many have come to love nowadays. The show’s next episode will air on January 30, so if you like to watch live, you have a couple of days to catch up.
Lastly, at 10 is High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson as Morgan Guillory, whose exceptional mind helps her solve a crime while she’s on…cleaning duty? The show brings a more lighthearted tone than some of the previous shows but still has the gripping narrative you would find with the previously mentioned shows. The show is in its first season and 13 episodes deep, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get up before the next episode airs!
There you have it! That was a list and deep dive into some of the hottest movies and TV shows at the moment. If you’re doing your homework, you should be more than prepared for the Oscars on March 2, 2025.
