St. Louis County Police Release Briefing Video of Fatal Tapestry Drive Shooting

St. Louis County police released a Critical Incident Briefing video concerning the September 15 shooting on Tapestry Drive that killed a 40-year-old man.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Police have released a Critical Incident Briefing video concerning the September 15 officer-involved shooting on Tapestry Drive that killed a 40-year-old man.

The St. Louis County Police Department announced the video’s availability on October 30 and said there were no further investigative updates at that time.

The briefing is available on YouTube.

Police Confirmed Officer’s Gunfire Caused Death

Police previously identified the deceased as Ryan Woods, 40, of the 200 block of Tapestry Drive.

In a September 17 update, the department said investigators determined that an officer’s gunfire struck Woods and resulted in his death.

That finding clarified the department’s initial September 16 announcement, which said investigators had not yet determined whether his fatal injuries resulted from police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound.

Incident Began With Welfare Check

According to police, South County Precinct officers responded to a welfare check in the 200 block of Tapestry Drive at approximately 2:14 p.m. on September 15.

The department said a man fired shots from inside the residence when officers arrived. Officers established containment and requested the Tactical Operations Unit and a crisis negotiator.

Police said the man continued firing from inside the home, directing rounds toward neighboring residences and officers.

Tactical officers attempted to establish contact and used a loudspeaker to issue commands for him to leave the residence, according to the department.

During the incident, a Tactical Operations Unit officer fired into the home. After further attempts to make contact, officers breached the door and entered, finding Woods with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

These details reflect the department’s account in its written releases.

Investigation Handled by County Detectives

The department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons is investigating the shooting.

Police described the officer involved as 44 years old with 18 years of law enforcement experience. The supplied releases did not identify the officer.

No officers were physically injured, according to police.

The October 30 announcement did not provide a final investigative determination or announce whether the officer’s actions complied with department policy or applicable law.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact investigators at 636-529-8210.
