The New Orleans Pelicans have expressed intentions to lock CJ McCollum to their future plans.
“It sounds like CJ McCollum is having some contract extension talks with the Pelicans,” said ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, via RealGM. “I’m not sure when he can actually sign that, Andrew. I know he signed his last contract extension in 2019.”
“I believe it is next month when they can start talking about that,” said Pels insider Andrew Lopez. “I know it’s before the season…”
McCollum, 30, still has two years left in his contract that he signed in 2019 and will earn a combined $68 million in salary. As such, a potential extension would mean that NOLA is fully committed to the veteran guard’s skills and leadership that he provides.
Added by Windhorst, the franchise brass also have plans on securing Larry Nance Jr. on a long-term picture, who will enter the final year of his 2018 multi-year contract.
“I think the Pelicans are also interested in extending Larry Nance’s contract,” claimed by Windhorst. “We’ll see if that gets done.”
Both McCollum and Nance Jr. arrived in the Big Easy via February transaction with the Portland Trail Blazers, helping the promising Pelicans to blaze off for a late 21-22 season run. Their contributions boosted NOLA to secure a postseason seat after winning back-to-back Play-In Games against the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Clippers.
With Zion Williamson expected to be back and ready, New Orleans is being widely assumed as a dark horse title contender for next campaign.
