Phoenix Candlelight Vigil to Honor Dolores Huerta at City Hall

PHOENIX — Councilwoman Betty Guardado and fellow labor leaders will gather outside Phoenix City Hall at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2026, for a candlelight vigil honoring the life and legacy of Dolores Huerta. Community members are invited to attend.

Huerta, the labor organizer and civil rights advocate who co-founded the United Farm Workers, died October 28 at age 96, according to a statement shared by the Dolores Huerta Foundation. Her family said she died at home in Bakersfield, California, surrounded by close family.

The Phoenix gathering will bring together workers, families, organizers, and neighbors to mourn her passing, celebrate her contributions, and recognize her lifelong commitment to dignity and justice for working people.

“Dolores showed generations of workers, especially Latinas like me, that our voices matter and that together we have the power to change lives,” Guardado said in the announcement.

Guardado, herself a labor leader, described the vigil as an opportunity for remembrance and renewed commitment to community.

“Tonight, we will come together with heavy hearts, but also with profound gratitude. We invite everyone whose life was touched by her courage to stand with us, honor her memory, and renew our commitment to caring for one another,” she said.
