Deputy prosecutors will continue leading the Office of the Prosecutor as the International Criminal Court carries on with its investigations and other judicial activities.
The International Criminal Court has confirmed that Prosecutor Karim Khan’s removal from office took effect immediately following a July 24, 2026, decision by the Assembly of States Parties.
During a special session, the Assembly found that Khan had committed serious misconduct and a serious breach of duty. The ICC acknowledged the decision while calling for the privacy and rights of everyone involved in the proceedings to be respected.
The Court said its deputy prosecutors will continue providing leadership, management and direction for the Office of the Prosecutor. They have performed those responsibilities since Khan took a leave of absence in May 2025 and continued after he was suspended from duty on June 8, 2026.
Despite the leadership changes and disciplinary proceedings, the ICC said it has continued fulfilling its mandate and carrying out its activities. The Court credited the professionalism and dedication of its staff for maintaining operations throughout the process.
The ICC also reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful workplace for all personnel.
“The ICC remains firmly committed to advancing accountability and delivering justice for victims of crimes that deeply shock the conscience of humanity,” the Court said.
The Assembly of States Parties is the ICC’s management oversight and legislative body. It comprises representatives of countries that have ratified or joined the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the Court.
