Get to Know More About Motherland Jams

If you were to go to Google today and look up “Motherland Jams,” you would find a business in Phoenix, Arizona, with a perfect five-star review on Google Reviews, with 44 people leaving reviews. But who is the owner of these highly successful belly dance classes?

The class is run by Houston, Texas native Dr. Abagail Dunn, who learned how to belly dance in Egypt, the “motherland. ” The website describes the business as “a unique sisterhood of ladies that get together to dance, laugh, and celebrate femininity in a safe and welcoming environment.

Dunn started belly dancing, “several years,” ago and wanted to share their love of dance with others, which led her to create this class, which has grown ever since.
“Personally, belly dance is a way of life to me. It allows me to express myself in a unique and fun way,” said Dunn.

Belly Dancing is a type of dance that is guided by the music and Dunn lets the music and movements guide her in her teachings, “I allow the music to dictate the movements. It’s important to me for each of my performances to look different from my last, a process I am still working on.”

It’s not just the dance that matters to Dunn at Motherland Jams, it’s the ladies who also decide to attend the sessions. On the website, it says, “We strive to make ladies feel comfortable in their own bodies every time they choose to step through our doors, or join us online, and bless us with their unique brand of ‘awesomeness.'”

The classes aren’t solely about dance either, as Dunn says that she, “finds the the conversations that the class sparks incredibly profound and rewarding.”

Belly dancing is rich in history, allegedly dating back to when Alexander the Great was alive, which was in (356-323 B.C.), so how does such a dance still find an audience today and how does it flourish in Arizona, where it’s one of the only pure belly dancing studios?
“As an entrepreneur, I’ve found it difficult to grow beyond the few loyal members that I have,” said Dunn, “but I have a few changes along the horizon that will allow me to share my unique craft with others.”

Motherland Jams is still trying to grow here in the Valley but in a way that highlights community and love, like two years ago when Dunn put on an event for a family who was, “wronged by racism,” where she brought several artists together for a beautiful cause. At the end of the day, music is bigger than all of us and can unify, which is Motherland Jams mission.

Motherland Jams continues to grow, as they are currently working on a new website and a new app to grow their audience.
If belly dancing sounds interesting to you, there is no better place in the valley than Motherland Jams which holds classes on Saturdays at 10 am-11 am for beginners course and 8 pm-9 pm for professional courses and will charge you about $75.00 for each class.
