Explosive quarterback performances, career-best rushing efforts, and disruptive defensive displays headline the Maxwell Football Club’s latest college football spotlight. Oregon State quarterback Braden Atkinson and Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell are among the offensive standouts, while Miami defensive end Damon Wilson II leads a strong group of defensive performers.

The attention now turns to Week 6, with undefeated Georgia and Alabama preparing to meet in Tuscaloosa and unbeaten Indiana visiting unbeaten Nebraska.

Atkinson and Russell Lead Quarterback Standouts

Oregon State’s Braden Atkinson delivered one of the week’s most efficient passing performances against Colorado State, completing 31 of 34 passes for 430 yards and five touchdowns. The Mercer transfer ranks second nationally in touchdown passes, according to the supplied Maxwell Football Club update, and has helped position Oregon State as a Pac-12 contender.

Alabama’s Keelon Russell continued his strong stretch in a 56–23 victory over Mississippi State. He completed 16 of 22 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns, adding a rushing score. Over his last three games, Russell has thrown 10 touchdown passes without an interception while averaging 12.3 yards per attempt.

Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway accounted for five touchdowns in a 55–19 road victory over Arizona State, completing 25 of 40 passes for 306 yards.

Wake Forest’s Gio Lopez also accounted for five scores as the Demon Deacons defeated Stanford 57–3. Lopez threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover, while rushing for 88 yards and three scores. The victory represented Wake Forest’s largest margin of victory in an ACC game, according to the update.

Running Backs Deliver Career Days

Tennessee’s DeSean Bishop powered a 24–14 victory over Auburn, rushing for 220 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. All three totals were single-game career highs.

Iowa State’s Aiden Flora showed his versatility in a 45–42 win over West Virginia. The former walk-on rushed for a career-high 212 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries. The former high school quarterback also completed two passes for 48 yards and two additional scores.

Northwestern’s Caleb Komolafe helped lead a dominant rushing performance in a 34–13 victory over Penn State at the newly renovated Ryan Field. Komolafe contributed 188 yards and a touchdown, while teammate Joseph Himon added 162 yards and two scores on 10 touches. Northwestern finished with 413 rushing yards, its highest total in nearly 23 years.

Missouri’s Jamal Roberts rushed for 211 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries in a 45–17 upset of No. 8 Florida. Roberts has surpassed 100 rushing yards in three of his last four games.

Bednarik Spotlight: Pressure and Takeaways Shape Results

The defensive spotlight features players whose sacks, backfield pressure, and takeaways helped swing games.

Miami defensive end Damon Wilson II recorded 2.5 sacks, three tackles and a quarterback hurry in the Hurricanes’ 41–13 victory at Clemson. His 11 total pressures led Week 5 defensive players, according to Pro Football Focus figures cited in the update.

SMU defensive end Marques White produced seven tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble against Boston College, helping the Mustangs withstand an upset bid despite gaining only 218 yards on offense.

Bowling Green defensive tackle Eriq George registered eight tackles and his first career three-sack game in a 24–20 victory over Miami (Ohio). The Falcons held the RedHawks to 3.1 yards per carry, and head coach Eddie George earned his first victory of the season.

Minnesota edge defender TJ Bush contributed four tackles, two sacks and a pass breakup in a 20–14 win over Michigan. Minnesota allowed only 180 yards and shut out the Wolverines in the second half, earning its first home victory over Michigan since 1977.

NC State linebacker Popo Aguirre recovered three fumbles and made six tackles in a three-point victory over Louisville. His recoveries repeatedly interrupted the Cardinals’ offense.

Colorado defensive tackle Santana Hopper stood out despite a 29–7 loss to Texas Tech, collecting 10 tackles, including five tackles for loss, and four quarterback hurries.

Florida State edge defender Rylan Kennedy contributed two sacks, three tackles for loss, four total tackles and a pass breakup in a 38–7 victory over Virginia. The Seminoles finished with 10 sacks.

Pitt defensive end Isaiah Neal helped the Panthers survive a 35–33 win at Virginia Tech, recording six tackles, a half-sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and six pressures. Pitt’s defense generated four takeaways in the matchup between previously unbeaten teams.

Alabama’s Xavier Griffin Earns Freshman Recognition

Alabama linebacker Xavier Griffin was named the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award Player of the Week.

Griffin received his largest workload of the season against Mississippi State and responded with a game-high nine tackles and his first career sack. His performance added another emerging contributor to Alabama’s defense heading into the Georgia matchup.

Indiana at Nebraska: Nebraska coach Matt Rhule has an opportunity to secure a significant victory in his fourth season. Indiana enters unbeaten, but its six-point win over Northwestern suggests the Hoosiers can be challenged.

UCLA at Oregon: UCLA has opened 4–0 under new coach Bob Chesney, already exceeding its previous season’s win total. An offense averaging nearly 45 points per game faces a substantial road test at Autzen Stadium. Oregon has won consecutive games since its Week 2 loss at Oklahoma State, including a victory at USC.

LSU at Kentucky: Kentucky coach Will Stein has built early momentum with victories over Texas A&M and South Carolina. LSU, which lost to Ole Miss in September, needs to avoid another setback as a demanding second-half schedule approaches.

Georgia at Alabama: The undefeated SEC powers meet in the week’s marquee matchup. According to the preview, Alabama has won nine of their 11 meetings since 2012, a stretch that includes five SEC championship games and two national championship games. Russell’s recent form gives Alabama momentum, while Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton and coach Kirby Smart seek a response after the Crimson Tide ended Georgia’s 33-game home winning streak last season.

With standout players building their award cases and unbeaten teams facing major tests, Week 6 offers another opportunity to reshape college football’s conference races and postseason picture.
