PHOENIX, AZ — The City of Phoenix is combining public art with innovative climate technology to help combat extreme desert heat. Mayor Kate Gallego and District 3 Councilwoman Debra Stark will unveil a new heat-reducing mural at Cave Creek Sweetwater Park on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
The mural, created by artist Nicole Poppell, features EnKoat, an innovative coating manufactured in Phoenix and designed to withstand extreme temperatures while reducing surface heat.
City officials describe the project as the first of its kind in Phoenix, highlighting how locally developed technology can support climate resilience while bringing artistic expression to public spaces.
Innovative Technology Designed for Desert Heat
Phoenix continues to face challenges associated with extreme summer temperatures, making heat mitigation an important priority for city leaders.
The new mural incorporates EnKoat, a specialized coating designed to reduce surface temperatures and provide greater durability than conventional products.
According to the city, the coating is estimated to last 10 years or longer, offering approximately two to three times the durability of traditional coatings.
The technology could provide opportunities for integrating heat-reducing materials into public art installations and other outdoor spaces throughout Phoenix.
While the city has highlighted the coating’s potential to reduce surface temperatures, specific temperature reductions for the mural have not been provided.
Supporting Local Innovation and Public Art
The project brings together the City of Phoenix, its Office of Innovation, and the Office of Arts and Culture.
By incorporating locally manufactured technology into a public art installation, Phoenix is exploring how innovation, sustainability, and community beautification can work together.
Artist Nicole Poppell’s mural will serve as both a creative addition to Cave Creek Sweetwater Park and a demonstration of how emerging materials may help public spaces better withstand Arizona’s demanding climate.
The initiative also showcases Phoenix-based manufacturing and the potential for locally developed products to address environmental challenges.
