IRVING, Texas — The College Football Playoff says discussions with ESPN over media rights connected to a potential expansion to 24 teams will continue after the expiration of an exclusive negotiating window.
In an update released Saturday, October 10, the CFP confirmed that its exclusive 30-day negotiating period with ESPN ended Friday, October 9. However, the organization said the deadline did not bring the talks to a close.
“The dialogue throughout the window has been constructive, and we will carry these conversations forward with ESPN as we determine the path ahead,” the CFP said.
The statement signals that ESPN remains involved in discussions about how a potential 24-team playoff would be televised. It does not announce an agreement or confirm that expansion has been approved.
Expansion Remains Under Discussion
The CFP described a move to 24 teams as a possibility, leaving the eventual outcome unresolved. Saturday’s update did not outline a proposed implementation date, qualification rules, scheduling arrangements or financial terms.
Those details would be central to understanding how an expanded playoff could operate and which programs would gain access. For now, the announcement addresses only the status of the media rights negotiations.
The expiration of the exclusive window is a milestone in the discussions, but the CFP did not announce negotiations with another broadcaster or provide details about any alternative options.
More Updates Expected
The CFP said confidentiality prevents it from sharing additional information at this stage.
“Given the confidential nature of these discussions, there isn’t more to share at this time,” the organization said, adding that it would provide further updates when appropriate.
For teams and fans watching the expansion debate, the immediate takeaway is that discussions remain active. A potential 24-team playoff is still under consideration, with no final decision announced in the October 10 statement.
