A new survey from JustWatch is giving fresh insight into how American Star Wars fans feel about the franchise’s trilogies, streaming series, and which iconic characters deserve their own spin-off story next.
Based on responses from 844 U.S. users surveyed on May 12, 2026, the results show that while longtime fans still overwhelmingly favor the Original Trilogy, younger viewers are helping reshape the future of the galaxy far, far away.
The Original Trilogy Still Rules the Galaxy
Despite decades of new films and streaming content, the Original Trilogy (Episodes IV–VI) remains the clear fan favorite among Americans.
Fan-Favorite Trilogy Rankings
- The Original Trilogy (Episodes IV–VI) — 83%
- The Prequel Trilogy (Episodes I–III) — 12%
- The Sequel Trilogy (Episodes VII–IX) — 4%
The survey also revealed a notable generational divide. Nearly 30% of fans under 35 say the Prequel Trilogy is their favorite, compared to just 9% of fans over 35. That suggests the era many younger viewers grew up with is gaining appreciation over time.
Streaming Shows Split the Audience
The Star Wars television universe continues to grow, and two major series are now battling for fan supremacy: Andor and The Mandalorian.
According to the survey:
- Andor performs especially well among men and viewers under 35, earning support from 51% of younger fans.
- The Mandalorian dominates among women, with 61% naming it their favorite Star Wars series.
The results highlight how Disney’s streaming expansion has successfully attracted different audiences with very different storytelling styles — from the political drama of Andor to the action-adventure feel of The Mandalorian.
Chewbacca Tops the Spin-Off Wish List
When fans were asked which Star Wars character deserves their own spin-off or origin story, one legendary Wookiee came out on top.
Most Wanted Spin-Off Characters
- Chewbacca — 12%
- Yoda — 9%
- Lando Calrissian — 6%
- Mace Windu — also received strong support
Chewbacca beating characters like Yoda and Mace Windu may surprise some fans, but it shows there is still major interest in exploring untold stories from the original era of Star Wars.
A Franchise Bridging Generations
The survey paints a picture of a franchise that continues to evolve while staying deeply connected to its roots. Older fans remain loyal to the classic trilogy, younger audiences are embracing the prequels and newer streaming stories, and iconic legacy characters still dominate fan wish lists.
Whether it’s nostalgia for Luke Skywalker’s original journey or excitement surrounding newer Disney+ series, one thing is clear: Star Wars remains one of the most passionately followed franchises in entertainment history.
