Star Wars Fans Are Divided Ahead of The Mandalorian & Grogu — New JustWatch Survey Reveals Generational Split

As anticipation builds for the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu theatrical release, streaming guide giant JustWatch has unveiled a new survey revealing where Star Wars fans stand on the franchise’s biggest debates. From favorite trilogies and TV series to long-awaited spin-off characters, the galaxy far, far away still sparks passionate opinions across generations.

The report gathered responses from more than 3,000 fans globally, including nearly 1,000 respondents in the United States, offering a snapshot of how audiences currently view the ever-expanding Star Wars universe.

Original Trilogy Dominates the Galaxy

Despite decades of new films, Disney+ series, and expanding lore, the classic trilogy starring Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo remains the undisputed favorite among fans.

According to the survey, 83% of U.S. respondents selected the Original Trilogy (Episodes IV–VI) as their favorite era of Star Wars storytelling. The Prequel Trilogy (Episodes I–III) came in second with 12%, while the Sequel Trilogy (Episodes VII–IX) received just 4%.

Interestingly, generational differences emerged in the results. Nearly 30% of American fans under 35 chose the Prequel Trilogy as their favorite, compared to only 9% of fans over 35. The findings suggest younger viewers who grew up with characters like Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi continue to have strong nostalgia for the George Lucas prequel era.

Internationally, the Prequels performed even better, especially in France, Germany, and Italy, where support surpassed 20%.

The Mandalorian vs. Andor: Fans Are Divided

When it comes to television, the Star Wars fanbase appears split between two of Disney’s most acclaimed streaming series: The Mandalorian and Andor.

In the United States, The Mandalorian narrowly edged out Andor, earning 44% of the vote compared to 42%.

However, demographic breakdowns revealed major differences in audience preferences:

  • Men under 35 strongly favored Andor, with 51% support.
  • Women overwhelmingly preferred The Mandalorian, with 61% selecting the series as their favorite.

Across Europe, the numbers varied dramatically. Spain showed the strongest support for The Mandalorian at 64%, while UK audiences leaned slightly toward Andor.

The results highlight how Star Wars storytelling has evolved into multiple tones and styles — from the gritty political drama of Andor to the adventurous, classic Western-inspired storytelling of The Mandalorian.

Fans Want a Chewbacca Spin-Off

Perhaps the survey’s biggest surprise came from the character spin-off category.

Fans overwhelmingly chose Chewbacca as the Star Wars character most deserving of a standalone series or origin story.

The top fan requests included:

  1. Chewbacca
  2. Yoda
  3. Lando Calrissian
  4. Mace Windu
  5. R2-D2
  6. Jar Jar Binks
  7. Princess Leia

The inclusion of Jar Jar Binks on the list may surprise longtime fans, but it also reflects the growing reappraisal of the character by younger audiences online.

A Franchise That Continues to Evolve

The survey reinforces one major truth about Star Wars: while newer films and series continue to divide audiences, the franchise remains one of the most culturally powerful entertainment properties in the world.

Classic characters still dominate fan conversations, while newer projects like Andor and The Mandalorian continue reshaping what Star Wars storytelling can look like in the streaming era.

With The Mandalorian & Grogu heading to theaters soon, Disney and Lucasfilm will likely be paying close attention to where fan passion is strongest.
