A Nation on the Edge of Hunger
With the federal government shutdown threatening to halt Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for over 40 million Americans, DoorDash has stepped up to meet a growing food crisis head-on. The tech company announced its Emergency Food Response, delivering 1 million free meals through food banks and waiving delivery fees for 300,000 grocery orders for SNAP recipients nationwide.
This initiative comes as food banks report overwhelming demand from families already struggling to make ends meet. The loss of SNAP funding could leave 21 million children, 16 million working families, and 5 million seniors without vital food support.
DoorDash’s Emergency Food Response
DoorDash’s plan focuses on immediate, practical relief as government funding stalls:
-
1 Million Free Meals
Through its Project DASH program, DoorDash is providing free delivery for over 300 food banks and pantries across the U.S., totaling roughly 1 million meals in November. -
Fee Waivers for SNAP Grocery Orders
SNAP recipients shopping with Sprouts, Dollar General, Food Lion, Hy-Vee, Wegmans, and other major grocers via DoorDash will see delivery and service fees waived on one order this November—helping families stretch budgets during the crisis. -
DashMart Food Donations
DoorDash is donating surplus food and essential goods from its DashMart convenience hubs to local food banks serving hard-hit communities.
“Doing Nothing Isn’t an Option”
“No one should go hungry in America—period,” said Max Rettig, Vice President and Global Head of Public Policy at DoorDash. “Millions of families are worried about how they’ll put food on the table. Fighting hunger is core to our mission, and while this is a stopgap—not a solution—doing nothing isn’t an option.”
Eric Mitchell, President of the Alliance to End Hunger, praised the effort but underscored the urgency of government action:
“The food security of millions of people who rely on SNAP is at dire risk. While we’re thankful for the companies stepping in to help, the only real solution is for Congress to restore and protect SNAP benefits immediately.”
How to Help
DoorDash is urging individuals, organizations, and companies to take action:
-
Donate or Volunteer: Support local food banks or national networks like Feeding America.
-
Partner with Project DASH: Food banks and nonprofits can contact projectdash@doordash.com to join the initiative.
-
Spread Awareness: Encourage elected officials to prioritize SNAP funding before the crisis deepens.

The Bigger Picture
DoorDash’s Emergency Food Response highlights a grim reality: private efforts cannot replace public safety nets. As corporations and nonprofits rush to fill the gap, the fate of millions still hinges on whether Congress acts to restore SNAP funding.
At a moment when “the world’s richest country” faces a potential hunger crisis, this initiative serves as both a lifeline and a wake-up call.
