This College Football season continues to be one for the ages as all the underdogs seem to be winning and all the top dogs can’t hold their spots on the yard. As the playoffs draw closer, the question of ‘who’s in’ remains mostly a mystery.
The top 10 takes a bump as Ohio State, Miami, and Texas all move up a single spot as Penn State falls to 6th following a 7-point loss to Ohio State. Indiana continues their dominating streak, moving to 9-0 on the season and moving up to 8th in the polls. But the largest changes and massive wins and losses came from spots 11-25.
Texas A&M gets blown out 44-20 by unranked South Carolina, not only moving them from 10th to 15th in the polls, but giving them their first conference loss this season, meaning every SEC team now has a conference loss, causing there to be a 5-way tie for first place in the SEC, and only 2 teams being able to make the SEC Championship in just 4 weeks.
More big upsets come as Kansas State losses to unranked Houston and Pitt gets destroyed by SMU, moving both teams down 5 spots in the polls. Clemson gets destroyed at home by newly ranked Louisville and drops 8 spots in the polls. Army continues their dominant stretch, moving to 8-0 for only the third time since 1950, but must travel to Notre Dame next week to attempt to sustain their undefeated season.
Next week sees two of the most important matchups of the season take place as 16th ranked Ole Miss hosts the Georgia Bulldogs. For Ole Miss, it is win or go home. If they lose on Saturday, they are surely eliminated from playoff contention. On the flip side, with a win, they would hand Georgia their second conference loss of the season, almost ensuring that we would have an SEC Championship game that doesn’t involve Alabama or Georgia for the first time since 2013.
College Gameday will travel to Baton Rouge this weekend, as the 14th ranked LSU Tigers will host the now 11th ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. With two conference losses on the season, Alabama is looking to the future and must win out to ensure a spot in the 12-team playoff. With this being their hardest remaining game, a win in Death Valley could almost ensure a 10-2 record in Kalen DeBoer’s first season as the Alabama head coach. As for the Tigers, with only one conference loss, a win against the tide would keep not only their playoff hopes alive, but also their SEC Championship hopes alive. This rivalry game has the makings to be one of the best of all time, almost up there with their 2019 matchup.
For fans of teams on the cusp, such as myself, the entire season has been a longer rollercoaster ride than Universal Studios could ever dream of. As a college football fan, this season may go down as one of, if not THE, greatest college football season of all time… and we still have 2 months remaining.
