Christopher Landon’s Drop Explores Digital Danger in a Modern Thriller

Director Christopher Landon, known for genre-bending hits like “Happy Death Day” and “Freaky,” returns with “Drop,” a sleek psychological thriller that dives into the dangers of digital communication and anonymity.

The film stars Meghann Fahy of “The White Lotus” and Brandon Sklenar of “1923.” It premiered at South by Southwest in March and is now playing in theaters across the United States.

“Drop” begins with what seems like an ordinary first date. As the night unfolds, it becomes a tense, high-stakes confrontation shaped by trust, technology and the unknown.

“I’m a giant Hitchcock fan, I always have been,” Landon said. “And I thought that this felt like a modern Hitchcock movie. I also really wanted to try and bring back the ’90s thriller, which I think has been really absent from cinema.”

Landon, who previously directed “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” and contributed to several films in the franchise, said he hopes “Drop” encourages conversations about how people interact online.

“Often because people can hide behind technological anonymity, they feel like they have some kind of permission to, in some cases, be really abusive — and that’s not OK,” Landon said. “So I’m kind of hoping that’s a conversation people have.”

Known for putting fresh spins on classic horror and thriller tropes, Landon continues that trend in “Drop,” blending suspense with a sharp take on modern digital life.

He first gained attention as the screenwriter for “Disturbia” in 2007. After making his directorial debut with “Burning Palms,” he returned to horror with “The Marked Ones” in 2014. His breakout as a director came with the surprise success of “Happy Death Day,” followed by the body-swap slasher “Freaky” and Netflix’s “We Have a Ghost.”
