PHOENIX — The City of Phoenix is recruiting volunteers to help residents with their 2026 taxes through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which provides free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income individuals and families.
The annual program relies on community volunteers to make tax assistance accessible. Phoenix is seeking both tax preparers and volunteers for additional roles supporting the program.
Free Online Training Available
According to the city’s recruitment announcement, volunteers can receive free training to become IRS-certified tax preparers. The online training is self-paced and can be completed with as little as eight hours of training.
The flexible format allows prospective volunteers to work through the material around their schedules while developing skills they can use to help their neighbors.
More Ways to Volunteer
Residents interested in supporting the program have several options beyond preparing tax returns. The city also needs:
- Greeters
- Screeners
- Bilingual interpreters
- Site coordinators
These roles help support tax assistance sites and connect residents with the services they need.
Helping Families Access Free Tax Assistance
Phoenix’s VITA program helps eligible residents avoid tax preparation fees while accessing assistance with filing their returns. The city says its services also help taxpayers claim allowable deductions and credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit. City of Phoenix
For households managing tight budgets, free tax preparation can reduce filing expenses and provide valuable support during tax season.
