PHOENIX, Ariz. — October 6, 2025

A tense standoff in north-central Phoenix came to an end Sunday evening after police discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound inside a barricaded home near N. 3rd Street and E. Purdue Avenue. The incident began hours earlier when officers responded to reports of a woman being shot at the residence.

What Happened

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers arrived just after 11:00 a.m. to find a woman outside the home with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Inside the residence, the male suspect refused to surrender, prompting a large police presence that included the department’s Special Assignments Unit and a heavily armored BearCat vehicle. Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing officers attempting to communicate with the suspect throughout the afternoon.

After nearly six hours, officers obtained a search warrant and entered the home. Once inside, they discovered the man with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital, where authorities later confirmed he was in critical condition.

Police Response and Investigation

During the standoff, law enforcement secured the area and urged nearby residents to stay indoors or avoid the scene. Videos shared online showed tactical vehicles and officers surrounding the home as negotiators worked to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion.

No officers were injured during the response.

Detectives now believe the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic dispute, though the investigation is still ongoing. Police have not released the names of the individuals involved, pending notification of family members.

Community Impact

The incident caused major concern among neighbors, many of whom were forced to shelter in place for hours. Streets around 3rd Street and Purdue Avenue were temporarily closed as officers and crisis teams worked to secure the area.

Police have not said whether the suspect’s gunshot wound was self-inflicted, but confirmed that no other suspects are being sought at this time.

What’s Next

The Phoenix Police Department’s Homicide and Domestic Violence units are leading the investigation. Detectives will continue reviewing evidence and speaking with witnesses to determine what led up to the shooting and the extended barricade situation.
