One of the great rivalries in college football readies for another chapter as No. 6 Oklahoma faces No. 21 Texas in the latest edition of the Red River Showdown at the historic Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Whichever team escapes the State Fair of Texas with a win immediately becomes the favorite to capture the Big 12 championship, and the 2021 season has already been a bit of a wild ride for both programs.
The Sooners entered the year as the No. 2 team in the nation and a popular national title pick but have limped to 5-0, beating FBS opponents by an average of just 5.3 points per game. Two of the worst scoring outputs of the Lincoln Riley era have come in the last three games. On the other sideline, Texas has recovered nicely since a crushing loss to Arkansas in Week 2. The Longhorns dominated Texas Tech 70-35 and won their first game in Fort Worth against TCU since 2013. Quarterback Casey Thompson has Texas on a three-game winning streak since taking over the starting job in Week 3.
