Golden Globe winner Baz Luhrmann took to Instagram to share the first Elvis footage from Warner Bros. Pictures’ forthcoming musical drama. The 21-second teaser, which you can check out below, provides our first glimpse of Austin Butler’s portrayal of the King of Rock.
The all-star biopic was recently delayed for three weeks and is currently slated to hit theaters on June 24, 2022, which pits it against Sony Pictures’ Reese Witherspoon-produced drama film Where the Crawdads Sing.
Elvis will be led by Austin Butler as the titular King of Rock, Tom Hanks as Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker, and Olivia DeJonge as Presley’s only wife Priscilla. Joining them are Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rufus Sewell, Yola, Gary Clark Jr., Shonka Dukureh, Shannon Sanders, Lenesha Randolph, Jordan Holland, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Alton Mason.
“It is a musical drama about the life and music of Elvis Presley, seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker,” reads the synopsis. “The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley.”
The Elvis biopic is directed and produced by Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet, The Great Gatsby) from a screenplay he co-wrote with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce, and Jeremy Doner. Catherine Martin, Gail Berman, Patrick McCormick, Schuyler Weiss are producing.
